Discovery had a series of unrelated shows and were looking for a way to showcase them within a unifying campaign. I used the headlines in a provocative manner to helped sync up the shows and drive home the campaigns' tagline,
"There’s more to discover.”

On a Friday afternoon I was asked to do some spec work. I went home and worked through the weekend and came back with several. Of all of concepts I presented, this idea emerged as not only my favorite, but one of the teams' as well.

I was thrilled with the way I was able to capture the premium feeling of these luxurious cruises. More importantly, by incorporating Celebrity's logo into the ad, I made it OWNABLE to them and only them.

When it comes to public television, WGBH Boston has been a trailblazer for decades. In addition to broadcasting the PBS lineup, WGBH also produces their own network. The network however remains relatively unknown. Because of that, we were asked to reinvent the network. Everything needed to be reworked...all of course, within the confines of a public funded budget. In the end we created a new logo, multiple stings, animations, brand spots, and more importantly...a new voice.

"WORLDVOICES shows viewers every side of the story. Whether it’s an independent filmmaker, a Freedom Rider, the youngest kid in the (American) family or a viewer, we give every unique voice the chance to be heard. It’s all these diverse perspectives that make World a continually provocative experience. Because WORLDVOICES is not beholden to a parent company or ratings system, we have the freedom to be truthful, authentic and provocative – and we empower our viewers to be the same. This is a channel for voices outside the mainstream: people who aren’t satisfied with soundbite-driven news; filmmakers who don’t want to be mouthpieces for others; and viewers who care enough to be fully informed and actively involved."

WORLDVOICES
BE HEARD.

I'm a boat owner. If you haven't guessed how this story goes, I keep my boat at Admiral's Hill Marina in Chelsea, MA.

Because I fall into the demographic I was trying to reach, I needed only to think about that daily pull I feel to get out on the water. And so, The Harbor is Calling was born. With the help of a copywriter the headlines began to take shape. Ironically, it was the art direction that gave me the most trouble with this campaign.

Everytime I shared this work with my peers they all commented on how much they loved the logo. After nearly a decade of being told to make the logo bigger....I actually decided to do it myself, but in a way that was visually compelling. Turns out the gigantic logo was what my ads had been missing.

After I had my campaign all fleshed out, I walked into the marina's office one morning and sat down with the manager and the mechanic. I took them through the campaign and it was clear that the new look and feel was an instant hit. A few hours later the owner called me up and gave me the green light to start making this project a reality.

I poured more hours than anyone with a right mind should have when you consider that the client had no idea what I was up to. But in the end, I had a ball creating this campaign and was thrilled with the way it turned out.

Everyone once in a while it's good to work on something that reminds yourself why you got into this industry. For me, this campaign served that purpose.

Unforunately, the reality of building the website isn't nearly as much fun as designing it. This part to me is real work. So...the site is in staging at the moment while I find spare hours to throw at it. Stay tuned.

This 2001 college project turned out to be my first paying gig. I made a cool $100 for this billboard design. After all these years, I still love the thinking behind this one. Although…the more I sit with this, the more I wonder if ‘FREEDOM’ is even necessary. Doesn’t the cage say it all?

Kills me to see that the 2011 Harley campaign is essentially this very idea.

Back in 2006, the Discovery Channel hadn’t realized what a gold mine they had struck with Mike Rowe and Dirty Jobs. Working from a brief which restricted me from using Mike in the artwork I created this image that successfully captured the fun spirit that has made the show a hit.

Back in May of 2010, I was contacted by the owner of an UK based burgeoning cycling company—STRADA. Armed with only a name, and a belief that high end hand built wheels should be affordable, he went in search of branding help.

Thankfully, for the both of us, he came across my cycling blog and soon discovered that I was more than just a bicycle fanatic. We discussed his vision for STRADA, as well as his cycling influences. When it became clear to me that we both shared a love for the classic cycling branding of years gone by…I knew it was a project I needed to work on.

Logo and Wheel Branding: As with any new brand, the logo is key. All future design decisions are based off of it. For STRADA, I created a logo that felt both modern and classic. The addition of the 3 stripes were a nod to the classic jerseys of the past, as well as being an element that would provide future design flexibility. But most importantly, the logo looked great on a wheel.

Website: Clean, simple, intuitive, adaptable and social media were the words buzzing in my head as I designed this site. In the future, the hope is that this site will become a destination for news and articles as well as a place to purchase great custom built wheels.

Jerseys: I've condemned many cycling jersey designs in my day…so for me this was a challenging task. But, it was arguably my favorite. I created over 20 design options and in the end, I was pleased that the owner, along with the STRADA team riders, chose one of my favorites.

Recently, the Big Cheese over at Ritte Racing and Gray Market asked if I was available to help them out with their first print ad. As a fan of all things Ritte, as well as being a member of their racing team, (albeit the sorriest), I gladly set aside some time to pitch in. When I saw the photos of the concept for the ad, I knew I had made the right choice. The concept was there. It just needed some help coming to life.

So, for the next couple of days, I reached into my bag of Photoshop tricks. I pushed some colors here, played with some curves there....cloned, kerned, masked, filtered, tracked, cropped, duplicated, and dodged my way to something I am proud to have been a part of. Unfortunately, my dreams of wild compensation never materialized. I'm sad to report that a gorgeous new Bosberg bicycle never arrived at my doorstep.

Shot this in my home state of Massuchesetts. Spent the entire day on the docks in Gloucester in the frigid January weather. We may not have been in Alaska, but it sure felt arctic. This image won a Gold Award in the Graphis Photography annual. Myself and photographer Richard Schultz were also featured in PDN (Photo District News) magazine for this shoot.

I’m a huge fan of Asian cinema. I volunteered to do these posters for free because they are among my favorites.
